ESA What!? Unlocking Opportunities for Students with Disabilities in North Carolina | ESA+

As a special education teacher with over a decade of experience, one lesson I've seen repeated time and time again is that education is not one-size-fits-all—especially in special education.

Every child learns differently. A program that helps one student thrive may not be the right fit for another. The most effective instruction is individualized, flexible, and tailored to a student's unique strengths, challenges, and goals.

That's why I was so excited when I learned about ESA+ (Education Student Accounts Plus). This program gives families more choice and flexibility in selecting educational supports that meet their child's specific needs. Rather than relying on a single approach, parents can build a team and choose services that help their child succeed.

It may sound expensive, but for many families, it doesn't have to be. Eligible North Carolina students with disabilities can apply for ESA+ funding, which can help cover the cost of approved educational services and supports. This means families may be able to access individualized instruction and specialized resources without bearing the full financial burden themselves.

"How can I afford the specialized support my child needs?"

The good news is that North Carolina offers a program called Education Student Accounts Plus (ESA+), which helps eligible families access funding for educational services and supports designed specifically for students with disabilities. ESA+ funds can be used for approved expenses such as tutoring, educational technology, curriculum, therapies, and other educational supports.

I am excited to share that AdaptAble Pathways is an approved ESA+ provider, allowing eligible families to use ESA+ funds for tutoring and educational support services.

What Is ESA+?

The ESA+ Scholarship is a North Carolina program that provides funding to families of students with disabilities. Depending on eligibility, students may receive annual scholarship funding that can be used for approved educational expenses and services. The program offers different funding levels based on student eligibility criteria.

ESA+ is designed to give families flexibility and choice, allowing them to create educational programs that meet their child's unique needs.

Why ESA+ Is Beneficial for Students

Every child learns differently.

Some students need specialized reading instruction. Others need support with executive functioning, organization, study skills, social learning, communication, or adaptive skills. ESA+ helps families access services that may otherwise be financially out of reach.

Benefits of ESA+ include:

  • Personalized educational support

  • Flexible learning options

  • Access to specialized providers

  • Additional resources beyond the traditional school day

  • Opportunities to build academic, executive functioning, and independent living skills

Most importantly, ESA+ allows families to design supports around the individual learner rather than forcing the learner into a one-size-fits-all approach.

How Do Families Apply?

The ESA+ application process is managed through the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority (NCSEAA). Families generally need to:

  1. Create a MyPortal account.

  2. Complete the ESA+ application during the application window.

  3. Submit their child's Eligibility Determination from a North Carolina public school.

  4. Monitor their account for updates and award notifications.

Because application dates and requirements can change, families should always check the official ESA+ website for the most current information.

How AdaptAble Pathways Can Help

At AdaptAble Pathways, I believe there is no single path to success.

Every learner has unique strengths, challenges, interests, and goals. That's why I work closely with families to create an individualized plan that meets their child's specific needs.

Whether your child needs:

  • Academic tutoring

  • Executive function coaching

  • Social learning support

  • Study and organizational skills

  • Adaptive and independent living skill instruction

  • Parent consultation and educational planning

I can adapt instruction and supports to fit your learner.

My goal is not simply to provide tutoring sessions. My goal is to build confidence, increase independence, and help students develop skills that will benefit them for years to come.
